The Lord Reigns
Revelation 19 vs 6-8 Amplified - 6 Then I heard something like the shout of a vast multitude, and like the boom of many pounding waves, and like the roar of mighty peals of thunder, saying “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, [the Omnipotent, the Ruler of all] reigns. 7 Let us rejoice and shout for joy! Let us give Him glory and honor, for the marriage of the Lamb has come [at last] and His bride (the redeemed) has prepared herself.” 8 She has been permitted to dress in fine linen, dazzling white and clean--for the fine linen signifies the righteous acts of the saints [the ethical conduct, personal integrity, moral courage, and godly character of believers].
Title - THE LORD REIGNS.
The Eternal Sovereignty, Majesty, and Dominion of Almighty God
Key Scripture: Psalm 93:1 (KJV)
“The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the LORD is clothed with strength, wherewith he hath girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.”
INTRODUCTION: THE UNCHANGING REALITY OF GOD'S KINGSHIP
Among the most powerful declarations in Scripture are three simple words: THE LORD REIGNS.
These words are more than a statement of faith. They are a proclamation of divine sovereignty, an announcement of eternal authority, and an assurance that the affairs of heaven and earth remain under the supreme dominion of Almighty God.
Kings rise and fall. Kingdoms emerge and disappear. Governments change, economies fluctuate, nations experience turmoil, and human circumstances remain uncertain. Yet above the changing landscapes of human existence stands one eternal truth: The Lord reigns!
His throne is not threatened by earthly opposition. His authority is not diminished by human rebellion. His purposes are not frustrated by temporary setbacks, and His promises are not invalidated by the passage of time.
God does not merely possess power; He is the ultimate source of all power.
He does not merely occupy a throne; His throne is established forever.
He does not merely exercise authority; all creation exists under His sovereign rule.
Psalm 103:19 declares:
“The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all.”
The reign of God is universal, eternal, righteous, and glorious.
1. THE LORD REIGNS IN MAJESTY
Psalm 93:1 — The Lord is clothed with majesty.
Majesty speaks of supreme dignity, royal splendour, unmatched greatness, and overwhelming glory.
Earthly monarchs wear crowns and royal garments to signify their authority. God needs no external symbols to establish His kingship. Majesty belongs to His very nature.
His glory is intrinsic, His splendour incomparable, and His greatness beyond human comprehension.
Psalm 145:5 speaks of the glorious honour of God's majesty and His wondrous works.
The majesty of God reminds us that He is not an ordinary ruler.
He is the King of eternity.
He is the Ancient of Days.
He is the Most High God.
He is the King of glory.
When we truly behold the majesty of God, the greatness of our problems begins to diminish in comparison with the greatness of His power.
The believer who understands God's majesty learns to worship Him with reverence, approach Him with confidence, and trust Him without reservation.
2. THE LORD REIGNS WITH ABSOLUTE AUTHORITY
Daniel 4:35 (KJV)
“And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?”
God's authority is neither delegated nor dependent upon the approval of His creation.
He reigns because He is God.
His sovereignty extends over the visible and invisible realms.
He governs creation, history, nations, and the ultimate fulfilment of His eternal purposes.
Human beings exercise limited authority. Even the most powerful earthly rulers remain subject to circumstances beyond their control.
But God's dominion is unlimited.
He is never surprised by events.
He is never overwhelmed by circumstances.
He is never defeated by opposition.
He never loses His divine identity or authority.
However, divine sovereignty does not mean that everything occurring in the world reflects God's moral approval. Scripture acknowledges human rebellion, suffering, injustice, and evil while affirming that God's ultimate purposes will prevail.
The sovereignty of God assures us that evil will not have the final word.
3. THE LORD REIGNS OVER THE NATIONS
Psalm 47:8 (KJV)
“God reigneth over the heathen: God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness.”
The reign of God transcends geographical boundaries, political systems, cultural differences, and historical generations.
No nation exists beyond His knowledge.
No government operates outside His ultimate sovereignty.
No earthly kingdom possesses eternal authority.
Daniel 2:21 teaches that God changes times and seasons, removes kings, and establishes kings.
Throughout biblical history, God demonstrated His sovereignty over Egypt, Babylon, Persia, and other great empires.
Pharaoh discovered that earthly power cannot prevail against the purposes of God.
Nebuchadnezzar learned that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men.
Belshazzar discovered that human arrogance cannot overturn divine judgment.
The lesson is timeless:
Human power is temporary, but divine authority is eternal.
For believers, this truth inspires prayer for nations, respect for legitimate authority, commitment to justice, and confidence that the ultimate future of humanity rests in God's hands.
4. THE LORD REIGNS OVER THE STORMS OF LIFE
Psalm 29:10–11 (KJV)
“The LORD sitteth upon the flood; yea, the LORD sitteth King for ever. The LORD will give strength unto his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace.”
One of the most comforting revelations of God's sovereignty is that He remains King even when life becomes turbulent.
The flood may rise, but His throne remains established.
The winds may blow, but His authority remains unchanged.
The storms may rage, but His purposes remain secure.
In Mark 4:35–41, Jesus demonstrated His authority over the forces of nature when He commanded the wind and sea to become calm.
The disciples were overwhelmed by the storm, but Jesus was not.
Their circumstances produced fear, but His presence revealed divine authority.
There is a profound spiritual lesson here.
The presence of a storm does not indicate the absence of God's sovereignty.
Sometimes God calms the storm.
Sometimes He strengthens His children to endure it.
Sometimes He leads them through difficult circumstances into greater maturity, wisdom, and dependence upon Him.
The assurance of divine sovereignty is not that believers will never experience adversity, but that adversity cannot dethrone their God.
5. THE LORD REIGNS IN RIGHTEOUSNESS AND JUSTICE
Psalm 97:2 (KJV)
“Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.”
God's reign is not merely powerful; it is morally perfect.
His throne is established upon righteousness and justice.
Unlike human rulers, God is never corrupted by selfish ambition, manipulated by favouritism, or compromised by injustice.
His judgments are righteous.
His ways are holy.
His character is perfect.
His faithfulness is everlasting.
This is particularly important when believers encounter injustice, oppression, disappointment, or unexplained suffering.
Although divine justice may not always be immediately visible, Scripture assures us that God will ultimately judge the world in righteousness.
The reign of God therefore provides both comfort and responsibility.
It comforts those who suffer injustice and challenges those who exercise authority to govern with integrity, compassion, fairness, and humility.
To acknowledge the reign of a righteous God is to accept the responsibility of living righteously before Him.
6. THE LORD REIGNS FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION
Lamentations 5:19 (KJV)
“Thou, O LORD, remainest for ever; thy throne from generation to generation.”
The sovereignty of God is not confined to a particular historical period.
He was God before the foundations of the earth.
He remains God throughout every generation.
He will continue to reign throughout eternity.
Human generations come and go, but the throne of God remains.
The God of Abraham is the God of Isaac.
The God of Isaac is the God of Jacob.
The God who delivered Israel from Egypt remains faithful to His promises.
The God who sustained the early Church continues to sustain His people today.
This truth carries profound significance for Christian fatherhood and the transmission of faith.
Fathers must teach their children that their ultimate security does not rest in wealth, social status, political influence, or material possessions.
Their greatest security is found in knowing the living God.
A father who understands that the Lord reigns will seek to build a household in which God's Word is honoured, His character is reflected, and His authority is acknowledged.
One of the greatest legacies a father can leave his children is the conviction that God remains faithful and sovereign through every generation.
7. THE LORD REIGNS OVER THE IMPOSSIBLE
Jeremiah 32:17 (KJV)
“Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee.”
The sovereignty of God is inseparable from His omnipotence.
He possesses the power to accomplish everything consistent with His holy nature and purposes.
The Bible repeatedly demonstrates God's ability to intervene in circumstances beyond human capability.
He opened the Red Sea.
He provided manna in the wilderness.
He preserved Daniel in the lions' den.
He delivered the three Hebrew men from the fiery furnace.
He brought Lazarus out of the grave.
Above all, He raised Jesus Christ from the dead.
These biblical accounts reveal a God whose power is not restricted by natural limitations.
Yet faith in divine sovereignty must be accompanied by submission to divine wisdom.
God's ability to perform miracles does not mean He promises to fulfil every human desire in precisely the manner or timing we expect.
The believer's confidence is therefore twofold:
God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, and His wisdom is worthy of our trust even when His ways remain mysterious.
8. THE LORD REIGNS THROUGH JESUS CHRIST
Revelation 19:16 (KJV)
“And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”
The New Testament reveals the kingship of God through the person and redemptive work of Jesus Christ.
Jesus came proclaiming the kingdom of God.
He demonstrated divine authority through His teaching, miracles, forgiveness of sins, death, and resurrection.
Philippians 2:9–11 teaches that God highly exalted Christ and bestowed upon Him the name above every name, so that every knee should bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
The cross appeared to be a place of defeat, but through His death and resurrection, Christ accomplished the decisive victory over sin and death.
His resurrection revealed that death could not ultimately hold Him.
His ascension proclaimed His exaltation.
His promised return assures believers of the final manifestation of His righteous kingdom.
The Christian declaration that the Lord reigns therefore finds its fullest expression in the lordship of Jesus Christ.
He is not merely a historical teacher.
He is the risen Saviour.
He is the exalted Lord.
He is the coming King.
9. THE LORD REIGNS IN THE HEARTS OF HIS PEOPLE
The sovereignty of God is universal, but believers are also called to submit personally and willingly to His authority.
It is possible to acknowledge that God rules over creation while resisting His guidance in everyday life.
True discipleship involves allowing the lordship of Christ to shape our attitudes, relationships, priorities, decisions, and conduct.
Colossians 3:15 encourages believers to allow the peace of Christ to rule in their hearts.
When God reigns in our hearts, pride gives way to humility, selfishness to generosity, bitterness to forgiveness, and anxiety to prayerful trust.
His Word becomes the foundation of our decisions.
His character becomes the pattern for our conduct.
His glory becomes the ultimate purpose of our lives.
His love becomes the motivation for our service.
The greatest evidence that we believe God reigns is not merely what we proclaim with our lips, but how willingly we surrender our lives to His authority.
10. THE LORD REIGNS FOREVER
Revelation 11:15 (KJV)
“The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.”
The reign of God is eternal.
History is moving toward the ultimate fulfilment of His redemptive purposes.
The present world is marked by conflict, suffering, injustice, and mortality, but Scripture points believers toward a future in which God's righteousness and glory will be fully revealed.
Revelation 21:4 describes the removal of death, mourning, crying, and pain in the renewed creation.
The eternal reign of God assures believers that suffering is not the final destination of redeemed humanity.
Death will not reign forever.
Evil will not reign forever.
Sorrow will not reign forever.
The Lord will reign forever.
This is the ultimate hope of the Christian faith.
11. THE PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS OF DECLARING THAT THE LORD REIGNS
The declaration of God's sovereignty should transform the believer's daily life.
When the Lord reigns, we can worship with confidence. Our worship is directed toward the eternal King whose worthiness never changes.
When the Lord reigns, we can pray with expectation. We approach a heavenly Father who possesses both the power to act and the wisdom to answer according to His purposes.
When the Lord reigns, we can face uncertainty with courage. We may not know what tomorrow holds, but we know that tomorrow cannot escape His sovereign knowledge.
When the Lord reigns, we can endure suffering with hope. Our present circumstances do not determine the final outcome of God's redemptive plan.
When the Lord reigns, we can practise humility. Every human achievement, position, and possession must be viewed in the light of His supreme authority.
When the Lord reigns, we can raise our children with conviction. We can teach the next generation to place their trust in the eternal God rather than the temporary securities of this world.
When the Lord reigns, we can live with eternal perspective. Our earthly lives become opportunities to honour the King whose kingdom will never end.
12. LET THE EARTH REJOICE — THE JOY OF DIVINE SOVEREIGNTY
Psalm 97:1 (KJV)
“The LORD reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof.”
This verse reveals a remarkable connection between divine sovereignty and human joy.
The reign of God is not presented merely as a reason for trembling but also as a reason for rejoicing.
Why should the earth rejoice?
Because the One who reigns is righteous.
Because the One who governs creation is faithful.
Because the One who possesses unlimited power is also merciful.
Because the One who holds eternity in His hands is the Father of those who belong to Him through Jesus Christ.
The believer does not rejoice because every circumstance is pleasant.
The believer rejoices because the character of the eternal King remains unchanged.
We rejoice because His mercy endures forever.
We rejoice because His faithfulness reaches every generation.
We rejoice because His promises are trustworthy.
We rejoice because His kingdom cannot be shaken.
We rejoice because His love has been revealed through Jesus Christ.
Our joy is not founded upon the stability of earthly circumstances but upon the unchanging sovereignty of our heavenly Father.
CONCLUSION: THE THRONE IS OCCUPIED
One of the most reassuring truths in the entire Bible is that the throne of heaven is not vacant.
God has not abdicated His authority.
He has not abandoned His creation.
He has not surrendered His purposes.
He has not ceased to be faithful.
He remains the eternal King.
When nations tremble, the Lord reigns.
When economies fail, the Lord reigns.
When human strength diminishes, the Lord reigns.
When the future appears uncertain, the Lord reigns.
When prayers seem unanswered, the Lord reigns.
When the righteous suffer, the Lord reigns.
When earthly kingdoms collapse, the Lord reigns.
When one generation passes and another arises, the Lord reigns.
And when time gives way to eternity, the Lord will still reign.
The sovereignty of God is not an invitation to passivity, but a foundation for courageous faith, faithful obedience, persistent prayer, and enduring hope.
We may not understand everything that happens around us, but we can trust the character of the One who rules above us.
We may not control the circumstances of life, but we can entrust our lives to the God whose wisdom and power are without limit.
And we may not know every detail of the future, but we know that the eternal purposes of God will ultimately prevail.
The Lord reigns in majesty.
The Lord reigns in righteousness.
The Lord reigns in holiness.
The Lord reigns in power.
The Lord reigns in mercy.
The Lord reigns from generation to generation.
THE LORD REIGNS FOREVER AND EVER!
FINAL SCRIPTURE — PSALM 146:10 (KJV)
“The LORD shall reign for ever, even thy God, O Zion, unto all generations. Praise ye the LORD.”
